The NRD525 Versus the r5000by Dave Newkirk(Reprinted from "Enjoying Radio",circa 10/87 2/88)EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE JAPAN RADIOThe NRD-525's BFO control allowsCOMPANY NRD-525 AND KENHOOD R-5000adjustment of the radio's beat-frequencyRECEIVERSPART ONE (dpa)Last summer,oscillator over quite a rangeabove andI purchased an NRD-525 receiver frombelow IF center --only during CwUniversal Shortwave in Reynoldsburg,reception.And ad justing this controlOhio;shortly thereafter,I was able todoes not shift the '525's frequencyborrow a Kenwood R-5000 receiver for adisplay.As a result,you can tune in acouple of months.Here are a fewsignal of known frequencysay,WWVobservations on the quality and functionuntil the display shows that frequency,of these receivers,and how they compareand adjust the BFO control for the pitchFirst,however,I'11 discuss whyyouwant.Because you can adjust the BFOdecided on the NRD-525 over the R-5000;frequency above and below IF center,youthe choice seems to be a tough one forcana alsochoose "upper-。n"lower-some people,even though the 525 issideband"CW reception.(You're notconsiderably more expensive than thereally choosing a Cw sideband,of course,·5000but you are choosing how the pitch ofreceived signals changes as you tune in aWhy I Chose What I Choseparticular direction.I prefer areceiver in which received pitches fall"Fred,does adjusting the NRD-525'sas I tune upward in frequency.BFO control change the receiver'sSometimes,however,can dodgefrequency display?"In the end,myinterference more effectively if canchoice between the NRD-525 and R-5000choose which Cw "sideband"I'm listeninghinged entirely on this question.to.ByI putcracky,here's a receiver init to Fred Osterman via UBIX,Universalwhich CW reception is taken serfously!Shortwave's computer bulletin board.Another reason I chose the NRD-525Next time I logged onto the board,I hadoverthe R-5000 is the '5000's ridiculousnon-standard keypad,complete withnv answer"No,ad justment of thatcontrol does not change the frequencynearly-invisible numbers.Sure,out ofdisplay"Sold!"says I.But whythe box,the '5000 emits beeps and Morseshould this have been so importantme?code letters (depending on the keypaddo quite a bit of listeningmode)when you hit those keys,tobut I wantradiotelegraph(Morse code,CW,A1orto know what a key is before I press it,A1A,depending on what you prefer to callnot after!The NRD-525 has a standardit)signalsweak shortwave broadcastlike a calculator,adding-machine orcarriersincluded -and I wanted mynewtelephone-keypad.True,the feel ofreceiver to perform very wel!during CWthe 525's keypad buttons can best bereception.Part of that performancehaddescribed as cheesy,but I don't have toto include two things:(1)the facilityrelearn the position of its keys everyto adjust received-signal pitch to atime I enter a frequency as I do with thefrequencyconsiderably lowersay,400R-5000Hzthan the earsplitting 800-Hz pitchThe third main reason I chose theunfortunately standard in almost allNRD-
