THE END
LET'S PLAY BALLConvErter Update for GM's 4T80ELowers Costwithout Harsh Applyby Lance Wigginsost is always a big issue whenit comes to transmission repair. One of the first questions acustomer is sure to ask when he findsout he needs a transmission rebuild is"how much?"That cost was always a stickingpoint when it came to GM's 4T80E.That's because the 4T80E came witha Viscous Converter Clutch (VCC).The VCC seals a layer of silicone fluidbetween the converter cover and body,to soften the converter clutch apply(Figure la,1b,1c).And it works great;a nice, smoothapply that the driver can barely notice. But when it came time to replace aVCC converter,he'd notice...he'dnotice the price.Because the VCC isn'trebuildable, and a new one costs morethan 500 bucks! After the customer recovered fromthe shock, many shops would offerthem a lower-cost option:Switchingover to a standard,on/off converterclutch and block the TCC regulatorvalve.Sure,it cost less...a lot less. But now the transmission seemed tohave an additional shift, the converterclutch apply felt like you'd added a 5thgear range. The customers weren't toopleased with the way their new trans-mission felt, but it was either that orspring for a VCC.Figure 1A6GEARS May/June 2008
