CCSTechnical Information(2014)Technical Information No.31 Total No.1530ct28,2014(Total 2 pages)To:Relevant departments of CCS Headquarters,CCS branches,CCS plan approvalcenters,CCS surveyors,related ship-owners,ship management companies,shipyards,and designersNotice on Use of Guidelines for the Reduction of Underwater Noisefrom Commercial Shipping to Address Adverse Impacts on MarineLife(MEPC.1 Circ.833)In order to provide the guidance on reduction of underwater noise fromcommercial shipping,MEPC 66th session approved the guidelines for the reduction ofunderwater noise from commercial shipping to address adverse impacts on marine life,which came into force on 7 April 2014.The circular mentioned above is forwardedboth in Chinese and English for reference,and attention is to be paid to the mainpoints as follows:1ApplicationThese Guidelines can be applied to any commercial ship,do not address theintroduction of noise from naval and war ships and the deliberate introduction ofnoise for other purposes such as sonar or seismic activities.2 Standards and referencesIt is suggested to use ISO/PAS 17208-1 standards,ISO/DIS 16554 for underwaternoise measuring,and also the noise specification proposed by the International Councilfor the Exploration of the Sea(ICES)Cooperative Research Report No.209(CRR 209).3 Noise control measuresFor effective reduction of underwater noise,consideration can be given topropellers design,hull design,onboard machinery,and operation and maintenance.Please feel free to contact Technical Management Department of the CCS
