PRODUCT INSTRUCTION SHEETChlorine Dioxide Amperometric 4-20mA SensorsSECTION 1.0THEORY OF OPERATION1.0 CHLORINE DIOXIDE INTRODUCTION.Chlorine dioxide isconsidered one of the most powerful biocides available today.It is so effective that it was used to disinfect sites infectedwith the SARS virus and is used to disinfect areas know to becontaminate with Legionella sp.One of the most importantproperties of ClO2 that sets it apart from chlorine is its be-havior when placed in water.Not only is ClO2 10 times moresoluble in water than chlorine(3.01 grams/Liter at 25 degreesC),it doesn't hydrolyze when placed in solution.It remains asa "true"dissolved gas that retains its useful oxidative and bio-cidal properties throughout the entire 2 to 10 pH range.1.2 SENSOR OPERATING PRINCIPLE.Chlorine dioxide gasdiffuses across the sensor's hydrophobic silicone membranebetween the cathode and electrolyte solution.At the appliedpotential,it is electrochemically reduced at the gold cathodeas:CI2+4H*+5e--->CF+2H,OAt the same time,the silver anode is oxidized to form silverchloride(AgCl)as:Cl +Ag-->AgCl e-The release of electrons at the cathode and acceptance at theanode creates a current flow,which under constant conditions,is proportional to the chlorine dioxide concentration in themedium outside the sensor.The resulting low current outputis then conditioned to 4-20mA current by the sensor's on-board electronic circuitry.SECTION 2.0FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SENSOR2.1 pH.As dicussed in Section 1,there is no significant pHdependence when measuring ClO2.2.2 Chemical Interferences.The sensor should not be used inwater containing surfactants.2.3 FLOW.The membrance covered chlorine dioxide sensors(CLD series)function at any flow rate.To acheive reproduc-ible measurements,these sensors require a specified constantflow rate.To avoid complications(such as bubbles),it is best tooperate the sensors at a flow rate of 0.2-0.6 gpm.Parts covered by this product instruction sheet include:CLD201,CLD202,FORM:CLO2INSTALLVERS ION 3-REV 042308CLD210,FC72,CLDA-2015,CLDA-2016page 1 of6
