INTERNATIONALEMARITIMEORGANIZATION4 ALBERT EMBANKMENTLONDON SE1 7SRTelephone:+44(0)2077357611Fax:+44(0)2075873210MSC.1/Circ.168726 February 2025INTERIM GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFETY OF SHIPS USING AMMONIA AS FUELThe Maritime Safety Committee,at its 109th session(2 to 6 December 2024),havingconsidered a proposal by the Sub-Committee on Camriage of Cargoes and Containers,at its tenth session,approved the Interim guidelines for the safety of ships using ammonia asfue/.as set out in the annex2In doing so,the Committee recognized the importance of providing guidance for thesafe use of ammonia as fuel on board ships,so as to provide,at least,the same level of safetyand reliability as new and comparable conventional oil-fuelled main and auxiliary machineryinstallations3The Committee also noted the provisional nature of the Interim Guidelines,as well asthe approach to provide high-level goal-based guidance for the use of ammonia as fuel,not addressing all provisions in detail,recognizing the need for future revision once relevantexperience is available.4Member States are invited to bring the Interim Guidelines to the attention ofshipbuilders,manufacturers,shipowners,ship managers,masters and ship crews,bareboatcharterers and all other parties concerned.5 Member States are also invited to recount their experience gained through the use ofthese Interim Guidelines to the Organization for the Committee to keep the Interim Guidelinesunder reviewI:CIRCMSC1MSC.1-Circ.1687.docx
