CCSTechnical Information(2021)Technical Information No.58 Total No.564Nov.25,2021(Total 2 pages+Annex)To:Relevant shipowners,ship management companies,shipyards and designers,productmanufacturer,related departments of the Headquarters of CCS,the Society's surveyors,Plan Approval CentersNotice on implementation of MSC.1/Circ.1642 "Guidelines forSafety Measures for Pleasure Yachts of 300 Gross Tonnage andabove not Engaged in Trade Operating in Polar Waters"1.PrefaceThe Maritime Safety Committee,at its 103rd session (May 2021),approvedMSC.1/Circ.1642 "Guidelines for Safety Measures for Pleasure Yachts of 300 GrossTonnage and above not Engaged in Trade Operating in Polar Waters".The guidelines areapplicable to pleasure yachts of 300 gross tonnage and above not engaged in tradeoperating in polar waters.Il.Main technical pointsIn June 2018,the Maritime Safety Committee reviewed the safety measures for non-SOLASships operating in polar waters.The Committee noted the lack of a legal framework to allow forthe mandatory application of the Polar Code to non-SOLAS ships,together with evidenceregarding the number of accidents involving non-SOLAS ships operating in polar waters,particularly in the Antarctic area.Concluding that these facts revealed a significant risk to thesafety of lives at sea and a continuing threat to the marine environment,the Committeedetermined that urgent action needed to be taken.These Guidelines are the result of theCommittee's decision to develop recommendatory safety measures for pleasure yachts of 300
