CCSTechnical Information(2021)Technical Information No.59 Total No.565Now.25,2021(Total 2 pages+Annex)To:Relevant shipowners,ship management companies,shipyards and designers,productmanufacturer,related departments of the Headquarters of CCS,the Society's surveyors,Plan Approval CentersNotice on Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships UsingMethyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel (MSC.1/Circ.1621)Issued by IMO1.BackgroundThe Maritime Safety Committee,at its 102st session(4 to 11 Nov.2020),recognizingthe potential need for methanol/ethanol as a fuel for ships and the need forguidance in this regard,approved MSC.1/Circ.1621 as Interim Guidelines for theSafety of Ships Using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel.2.Technical key points2.1 This circular explains the background,scope of application and definitionsinvolved in the guidelines.2.2 Related requirements are put forward in MSC.1/Circ.1621 from the aspects ofobjective and functional requirements,general requirements,ship design andarrangement,fuel envelope system,material and piping design,refueling,fuel supply,power generation and propulsion devices,single-fuel engines,explosion protectionand zone division,ventilation,electrical devices and control monitoring and alarm.MSC.1/Circ.1621 is provided in the annex.This technical notice is made public onCCS website (www.ccs.org.cn),and is to be distributed to relevant ship owners,product manufacturers and shipping management companies etc.by CCS branches
